Just two short years ago, I discovered the potential opportunity around Salesforce. It was perfect timing as I was working my butt off in a job I didn’t like. Every morning was a struggle to get out of bed and say goodbye to my family for the day. All I needed was to get my certification and I'd be good, or so I thought.
There was still the daily drudgery of my job and the demands of life. After grinding it out for 9-12 hours, I came home to spend what little energy I had on my wife and son. The last thing I wanted to do was study for an exam, even though that was supposedly my ticket to a better life.
That's when the doubt started creeping in. Is it really as easy as passing an exam and instantly landing a job paying almost double what I make? It was looking too good to be true. My fear grew as I saw posts on social media about certified admins wondering why they weren’t getting interviews or callbacks. Should I be betting the farm on this?
That’s when I decided that I had to figure out a way to validate that this was the right path for me. What could I do to dip my toe in the Salesforce waters?
I had heard countless stories of people volunteering their time to non-profits which were often repeated by Salesforce coaches. But, remember, my time was precious. I just couldn’t bring myself to tell my wife that I needed to skip dinner so I could work for free. But, if I could make even just a few bucks, then I would be willing to sacrifice just a little bit more.
I knew there were plenty of projects on freelancing sites like Upwork and Freelancer.com. What I didn’t know was if someone would pay an inexperienced, uncertified admin to do small tasks in Salesforce. I wasn’t completely blind to this approach, though. I had years of selling and marketing under my belt and had confidence in my ability to make a strong case for hiring me.
Here’s what happened after two weeks of bidding on projects in Upwork. I had been hired to complete a project, and it was well within my abilities. After completing the job and making sure the client was happy with the work, I was asked if I could do ongoing projects and tasks. I latched on to the opportunity and after a few more months passed, the conversation turned into what would it take for me to become a full-time employee.
Look, if I can do it, so can you. That’s not to put myself down but to drive home the point that this isn’t impossible. The strategy I used is simple and can be learned by anybody.
